Security through obscurity? What does that even mean? Security through obscurity is the reliance on the secrecy of the implementation of a system or components of a system to keep it secure. It’s not truly analogous, but imagine it being like hiding your car instead of locking it, to try to keep it from being stolen. It might slow the thief that expects it to be in your driveway, but when some thief does happen upon it, it’s easy pickings.

The reason that analogy is bad, is because it’s rare that you find someone that uses security by obscurity as their only means of security. They don’t usually hide the admin page of their site instead of having a username and password. However, it’s quite common to see people use obscurity as a replacement for good security. Thinking that a weak password is okay because no one knows where to go to log in anyway is dangerous.

    Types of Security

There are three basic types of security: security by design, security by openness, and security by obscurity . The first two have been proven over and over to be extremely effective, even on their own.

security by design, security by openness, and security by obscurity

Security by design means pretty much what it sounds like. A system is designed from the beginning with security in mind. Malicious intent is assumed. User input and often even internals are not trusted. Instead rules are enforced and everything is checked and validated.

Security by openness relies on Linus’s Law, which states that “given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow” (an obvious adaptation of the oft proven idiom “many hands make light work”). It puts the code in front of lots of people by opening it up, and relies on the efforts of the masses to find and close any security vulnerabilities. All of the most popular open source applications use this method, from WordPress to Linux, and it has been extremely successful.

By contrast, security through obscurity hasn’t been proven to work on its own. A common mantra among digital security professionals is “security by obscurity is not security at all.” Even the National Institute of Standards and Technology, in their Guide to General Server Security (PDF) teach against it:

Open Design — System security should not depend on the secrecy of the implementation or its components.

    Open Design

The question of whether secrecy of systems is beneficial for security is not new. Alfred Charles Hobbs , a locksmith, wrote a book in 1853 titled “ Construction of Locks and Safes “. In it he said that “many well-meaning persons” assume that public exposure of a lock’s insecure design will end up helping criminals. His response to this concern applies as directly to today’s technical systems as it did to the locks of the nineteenth century:

    What is Continuous Improvement?

Let's define continuous improvement. Continuous improvement is a dedication to making small changes and improvements every day, with the expectation that those small improvements will add up to something significant.

The typical approach to self-improvement is to set a large goal, then try to take big leaps in order to accomplish the goal in as little time as possible. While this may sound good in theory, it often ends in burnout, frustration, and failure. Instead, we should focus on continuous improvementby slowly and slightly adjusting our normal everyday habits and behaviors.

It is so easy to dismiss the value of making slightly better decisions on a daily basis. Outlet Best Seller Dion Lee military blouson mini dress Manchester For Sale Buy Cheap Big Sale ObGV9

is not sexy. Getting one percent better isn't going to make headlines.

There is one thing about it though: it works.

    How Does Continuous Improvement Work?

So often we convince ourselves that change is only meaningful if there is some large, visible outcome associated with it. Whether it is losing weight, building a business, traveling the world or any other goal, we often put pressure on ourselves to make some earth-shattering improvement that everyone will talk about.

Meanwhile, improving by just 1 percent isn't notable (and sometimes it isn't even ). But it can be just as meaningful, especially in the long run.

In the beginning, there is basically no difference between making a choice that is 1 percent better or 1 percent worse. (In other words, it won't impact you very much today.) But as time goes on, these small improvements or declines compound and you suddenly find a very big gap between people who make slightly better decisions on a daily basis and those who don't.

    Here's the punchline:

This is why small choices don't make much of a difference at the time, but add up over the long-term.

For much more on this concept (and an example of a coach who used it achieve huge Olympic success), read this: This Coach Improved Every Tiny Thing by 1 Percent and Here’s What Happened .

    Continuous Improvement Tools

Now, let's talk about a few quick steps you can take right now to start focusing on continuous improvement.

Step 1: Do more of what already works

We often waste the resources and ideas at our fingertips because they don’t seem new and exciting.

There are many examples of behaviors, big and small, that have the opportunity to drive progress in our lives if we just did them with more consistency. Flossing every day. Never missing workouts. Performing fundamental business tasks each day, not just when you have time. Apologizing more often. .

Progress often hides behind boring solutions and underused insights. You don’t need more information. You don’t need a better strategy. You just need to do more of what already works.

    Step 2: Avoid tiny losses

In many cases, improvement is not about doing more things right, but about doing fewer things wrong.

This is a concept called improvement by subtraction, which is focused on doing less of what doesn't work: eliminating mistakes, reducing complexity, and stripping away the inessential.

    Here are some examples:

In the real world, it is often easier to improve your performance by cutting the downside rather than capturing the upside. Subtraction is more practical than addition.

One of the best ways to make big gains is to avoid tiny losses.

    Step 3: Measure backward

We often measure our progress by looking forward. We set goals. We plan milestones for our progress. Basically, we try to predict the future to some degree.

There is an opposite and, I think, more useful approach: measure backward, not forward.

Measuring backward means you make decisions based on what has already happened, not on what you want to happen.

    Here are a few examples:

Measure backward and then get a little bit better. What did you do last week? How can you improve by just a little bit this week?

Millions of people who can’t access the power of technology are being left behind— excluded from a world of opportunity.

What software applications and digital services would you create to improve people’s lives?

The power of digital inclusion in agriculture

Imagine: Increasing your harvest by 20 per-cent. Farmers in developing countries could significantly increase their crop yield if they had access to better information. Access to agricultural expertise and geospatial analytics could help them increase production by providing data that answers questions associated with planting, irrigating and applying fertilizers and pesticides. By plugging into available cloud-based information services, they could obtain relevant local data and analysis for their terrain, weather and soil conditions.

The power of digital inclusion in the refugee crisis

Imagine: Being a stranger in a strange land. Refugees caught up in the migrant crisis are extremely vulnerable and have to make a bewildering number of decisions. Think what a lifeline it would be to have a mobile phone app available in many languages that could quickly identify local emergency and shelter services; where to get donated clothing; how to take beginner language classes; and how to get medical assistance.

The power of digital inclusion in banking

Imagine: Not being able to write a check. Millions of people around the world are considered “underbanked”—lacking access to basic financial services such loans, insurance, checking or savings accounts. But what if new mobile technology solutions could facilitate enrollment of the underbanked community into special programs, giving them access to financial products as well as transaction and payment services?

The United Nations confirms that mobile-enabled solutions are improving life for the global community. Cloud computing, big data and Internet applications that simplify everyday tasks are accelerating economic growth, increasing social inclusion and providing new tools in the fight against poverty and climate change.

    The Living Progress Challenge Goal

To improve the lives of 1 million people by 2020. The Living Progress Challenge will combine information technology, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise employee expertise, with the global community’s most innovative ideas to accelerate opportunity for people. Together, we can drive #LivingProgress.

How does the Living Progress Challenge work?

Ideas: Crowdsource creative ideas from the global community.
